04. Project Integration Management
Project Integration Management is the first knowledge area that we will focus on. Itinvolves coordinating all the other project management knowledge areas throughout a project's life cycle. There are seven main processes involved in project integration management:
1. Develop the project charter,
2. Develop the preliminary project scope statement,
3. Develop the project management plan,
4. Direct and manage project execution,
5. Monitor and control the project work,
6. Perform integrated change control,
7. Close the project.
Now I will focus only on project integration management and its seven process groups. Through the other lessons, I will go in details about each of the other knowledge areas. main processes. The table in the end of this lesson will be used as a reference also in other lessons. Under initiating phase we have:
a) Project Charter - it is a document that formally recognizes the existence of a project and provides direction on the project's objectives and management. It will authorize the project manager to use organizational resources to complete the project.
b) Preliminary scope statement - helps the entire project team to understand the main idea behind the project. Preliminary scope statement will be the step before the scope statement - the document used to develop and confirm a common understanding of the project scope.
c)Project management plans - this document is used to coordinate all project planing documents and helping guide a project's execution and control. This document contains; an introduction or overview of the project, discussion on how the project is organized, work to be done, schedule and budget and so on.
One important task in the project management plan is to conduct a stakeholders' analysis which documents information about stakeholders. It contains besides personal information about them, unique facts, like; the level of interest in the project, their influence on the project and so on.
c) Project execution - is the process which takes the longest time and the most of project's business to be accomplieshed. It involves managing an performing the work described in the project management plan. Managers use different project management softwares to accomplish the project execution task.
d) Monitoring and controlling project work - includes collecting, measuring and disseminating performance information. Because changes are inevitable in most projects, it is important to develop and follow a process to monitor and control changes. After this process has been performed, usually the output would be: recommended corrective and preventive actions.
e) Integrated change control - involves identifying, evaluating and managing changes that happens through the project development. It mus make sure to understand why a change happens and when it is necessary to make changes, it should make sure that the change occurs. Than, a baseline is released - which is a document that contains the approved project management plan and the approved changes.
f) Closing the projects - is the last process in project integration management. To close the project, all the activities must be finalized and the approval of the stakeholders must be included.
